Veterans Day…Say Thank You If You Know One

I am straying from my holiday blog series just for today because it is Veterans Day. I do believe that most of us know at least one vet in our life. My husband is one, as is my father in law. The problem with today is that some who can’t appreciate what service people go through, just won’t give a damn.

This has been a very difficult week for many people. The individuals who are taking to the streets have the right to do so. But will they think about why they have the right to protest, hopefully peacefully. In my opinion, probably not. Try doing it in certain countries across the pond, as they say. You could be shot just for forming and not even marching.

Veterans are a certain breed for sure. You have to be part self-less to give any number of years of your life to your country. Let’s face it, not many of us would do that. It is the love for their country that drives them. They leave families behind for years of service. Some return, and some don’t. I am a baby boomer, so I remember how veterans were treated back during the Vietnam War. I was young, but I understood how disrespectful and hateful people could be. Frustration and ideological differences were directed toward servicemen.

The unfairness of their treatment, unfortunately has continued toward many today. They are battling a different beast, and it isn’t even in a foreign country. Veterans, young and old, deserve the respect and thanks for what they have gone through, either on home soil or overseas. There are good and bad, as with all people. A minority of any factor, should not deflect from the majority.

So if you see a service person or know a veteran, just saying those two words, “Thank You”, will mean so much. It will literally make their day and yours.
