Disaster Aid Scams…Choose Wisely

When horrific tragedies occur as in Texas and Louisiana presently, disaster aid scams start crawling out of the woodwork. Everyone and their brother is taking up funds for disaster relief.

                                           Choose Who You Know

I for one, become an instant cynic when it comes to disaster aid groups. Especially those I’ve never heard of. Unfortunately, this is when opportunists take advantage of people in their worst situations, and with those of us who want to help them.

Our plan is to stick with who we know. That being the Red Cross, and in this case, J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans. I’ve already seen posts pop up on Facebook, showing this group and that group taking collections for those in need. Sorry, but if I don’t know you, my money is not going to you, plain and simple.

However, there will be those people out there who will give to bogus groups. As good as most people are at times like this, you still have the crud of the earth, going for what they can get. Be careful, and do research on where you want your money to go. Of course, some of these unknown groups may be legitimate, but do you want your credit card and checkbook just floating out in space. Probably not.

                                           Best Method to Donate

Whatever way you use to give is up to you. Credit cards are probably still the best. They offer some form of protection to you. Another popular one is through your phone carrier via text. The amount you decide to give, just gets added to your statement. Red Cross has used this method and it has become very successful. Whichever way you decide to go, you’ll know where the money is going. Once again, do what is more comfortable for you and your contribution.

Report What you May Be Suspicious Of

Due to the countless possibilities of scams going on at this time, if you are suspicious, report it to your states attorney’s office. The only way to stop it is to speak up and prevent it from going further. The only way to beat scammers is to be one step ahead of them.  Don’t be afraid to give. So many are suffering now, and for once we all need to come together. Just don’t let the wrong ones get what they surely don’t deserve, our money!
