Society today has definitely taken a turn. This blog is my opinion only, but it will discuss just how separate we have all become from one another.
Society Has Become Mere Observers
We as a society have become mere observers, or even voyeurs. Watching the news yesterday, I witnessed first hand how people will just stand and watch as someone gets attacked in the middle of a crowded mall. A female thug robbed a vendor and was approached by the owner, another female, obviously smaller than the crook. The robber proceeded to beat the vendor, and people just stood there and watched! Yes, it was all on camera. As this poor woman tried to defend herself, no one came to her immediate aid.
Set, Phone, Record
We have become a society of communication specialists. On the spot camera people, ready to record at any moment. Why this can be good to some degree, gone is the human element of help thy fellow-man or woman, in this case. Just shaking my head, here was someone johnny on the spot, ready to hit the record button, but not do a damn thing to help that woman. It’s just appalling.
Be Advised, It’s Not an Age Thing
I will not condemn any particular age groups here. I would venture to say however, that more young people are ready to record on a phone than those my age would be. It appeared that in this case, age was not a reason. All ages stood by and watched. So this is what we have become? Enough people could have pulled her off and held her until security or police came. There was no evidence of a weapon, other than fists! So now, thanks to society, another thug is on the loose.
What if It Was Someone You Knew
That old saying, “What if the shoe was on the other foot?”, comes into strong play here. An innocent person trying to run her business in a mall, gets robbed and attacked, and people just stand and watch. What the hell? So this is what we have become, as a whole. Gawkers, and amateur camera hogs just recording to see how many views they get on You tube? Sad and pathetic. Do we only react if it’s someone we know? This was in a public mall people.
Let’s just hope that none of us ever have to experience trauma like this. Or know someone who does, and watches others just standing on the sidelines observing as if it was a wrestling match. I still have some confidence in our society, that at some point, someone will do the right thing! Okay, sure.
So Where’s the Society that Loves?
Apparently, the society that loves everyone and believes in vast diversity, is a myth. Help thy fellow human being lost its meaning where this one incident was concerned. Sure, don’t make a statement that concludes all people were like those at the mall. Sorry, in my opinion, it spoke volumes about where we have arrived. Hypocrites never recognize themselves. However, they always are quick to see others and their shortcomings. Take a look in the mirror people. You are who you are!
An update as of 12 pm…The assailant mentioned in the above post, has been arrested and charged, thanks to someone who recognized her on the video. Guess that counts for something now doesn’t it!
