Reality Commercials….Why We Need More

Reality television is everywhere today. We have real housewives, celebrities and real people living in confined spaces, living their lives in front of the cameras. Let’s keep going in that direction, shall we!

                                          Reality Selling Points

There are always advantages to having real people sell things. They tend to look more like you and me. Their physical appearance resembles the real world out there. Let’s face it, most of us are not 5’9″, and weigh 120lbs. We need to see reality from advertisers who want us to buy their products.

For example, why are 20 and 30 somethings with tight wrinkle free skin, advertising skin products used by older women?  Well of course they’re going to look good. Seriously advertisers, give those of us who need them a real woman our age, or at least in her pre-menopausal years. With so many creams out there, I need to see real aged skin. Yes, sometimes you use older celebrities in these ads. Once again, pick some average looking female in the grocery store and make her famous. Reality does sell, so I’ve heard.

Let’s move on to a razor commercial being played to death every morning when I am drinking my coffee before leaving for work. This goddess like creature with long legs walks out of the ocean onto a beach with other beautiful people, staring as she struts across the sand. She is shown shaving nothing from her armpits or her legs. Reality, not so much. How about an average sized woman, (even us short people have to shave our legs at times) walking out of the water in a one piece. When you show her shaving, she actually has hair on her legs. Now there is a novel concept. Real people using what they use all the time.

Sure, beautiful people tend to draw more attention from certain demographics, but those usually aren’t the ones buying said products. My husband might like to look at long legs or pretty faces, but he isn’t buying the women’s creams or shavers. However, there is always something for them too.

                                    Reality and Sex Does Sell

Men are an interesting demographic when it comes to reality commercials. All ages love good-looking women, we know that. So do the advertisers. Why you will always see attractive women doing car commercials, beer ads and so forth. There are many attractive women in the world, who aren’t built perfectly, but hey, they attract men. Use them in commercials. You don’t need celebrities or models.

Some advertisers mix both real people and well-known ones in their ads. Nutra-System has just the right mix of actual clients like you and I, who have tried their product and succeeded. This is how you reach the real consuming public. Attractive people, both male and female, who have proven that even you can lose weight and look good, just like them.

Using Not Very Attractive Reality That Works

Everyone has seen the commercials for prescription drugs to treat all ailments known to humanity. One can’t help but notice that many of these commercials claim to use real people, not actors. The latest ones being for eczema. Sure, now and then you’ll see attractive real people hawking these products, but once again, for something like eczema, this is where reality reigns. There must be a star out there or a model with this skin condition. That’s right!  They are too attractive to do something of that caliber, I suppose. I know that I would feel better knowing that they are not immune to such problems. It just makes the rest of us feel more normal.

                                  Imperfection is Perfection

All of us look in the mirror for one reason or another. Most of us don’t see perfection. Those who think that they do, well that’s a whole other blog entirely. Point being, that commercials interrupt our shows we like to watch, we see them over and over. So how about make them a reality. Use people we can identify with. Let’s be real and say, even those real housewives, are pretty fake!
