The term High Society has always conjured up snobs in people’s minds. Maybe it’s not to far from the truth! Problem with that assumption is there must be many high society wanna bees out there. I bring all this up because of the upcoming Preakness Stakes tomorrow, where the upper crust mesh with the infield crowds. It’s become an interesting dynamic in human interaction.
High Society Credentials
So what makes someone a high society operative? Most would say money, money and more money. I would tend to agree. Question is, were you born into it or did you honestly acquire it, and how well do you handle it? Back in the day it was all about the family you came from. There was a history there, that bled down to each generation. You would see it in the newspaper, in the “Society” section. Yes, the society section.
Young women were introduced to society at the “Bachelors Cotillion”. I can still remember looking at these pages and just thinking how so much I didn’t want to do that. No worries because I was one who didn’t qualify, for sure. All of these girls came from wealth. They all weren’t necessarily beautiful, but that didn’t really matter. They had the money and carried themselves accordingly. Yes, that was what high society tended to look like back in the day. It looks a little different now.
High Society is Now A Loose Term
Most people would define high society today as the dreaded 1%. The rest of us fall into that 99. It’s still about the money and the lack of thought as to how to spend it. The majority of us fall into the bargain population. I for one, have never sat in the Clubhouse at Pimlico Race Course. I went to the Preakness one time, and in the infield it was, since the fun was there. The Clubhouse is viewed as stuffy and well, not so much fun. The beer drinking crowd seemed to be more loose than the martini one for sure.
The difference these days is the money hasn’t always been handed down from one generation to another. You have entrepreneurs, lotto winners, all races, and nationalities, who can claim a portion of the high society pyramid. They can afford to wear the $200 dresses and shirts, and $2,000 watches etc…
Many of those people, however, tend to forget where they came from initially. They started out just like you and I, but got real fortunate along the way. Notice I’ve left out the usual crew of doctors and lawyers. We already know how they roll. I would be lying though if I said I wasn’t a bit envious. Who wouldn’t be? Money in excess would solve a lot of issues now in my world. But the one thing I will not do, is begrudge anyone for what they have acquired, no matter how it was accomplished.
The 1% Stigma is Not Every 99 Percenter’s Issue
So what this means is that, I have nothing against them. Why would I? They gave me a job, a home, electronic items, clothes, cars and so many other things. I don’t care what they do for me socially. They are philanthropic and give money to organizations to help cure diseases, help others and should I keep going. Yes, they write it off, so would I, and I do for my taxes. High Society can be the 1%, but some of those in the 99, better think about what they enjoy and where it came from. It came from the other side in most cases. So just say thank you!
