Humor…A Good Thing to Have, But Has It Left the Building?

Having a sense of humor is a good thing. Pretty sure I laugh at many things others don’t find funny. Through the years, I’ve weeded out people I could hang out with, if they didn’t have one. This may have resulted in losing decent, well abiding citizens to be around, but if you don’t get a joke, you’re not someone I can be around for long. It looks to have left the building.

Humor can take many forms . There are different topics which some people find uncomfortable to joke or laugh about.  For example, I don’t laugh at human or animal suffering. That’s just evil and inhumane. What I will laugh at is a Catholic, Jew and Muslim walk into a bar kind of joke.  It’s usually pretty funny. I can also laugh at a good sex joke. Unfortunately today, be careful who you want to tell that one too. You might get pulled over by the politically correct squad. My have times changed.

I grew up on raw comedy. We had so many good comics back in the day. There was Don Rickles, Robert Klein, Richard Pryor and the great George Carlin. Everyone and everything was up for grabs. It was great. Several weeks ago my husband and I watched a rerun of a Richard Pryor concert on Netflix. Still funny after all these years. Unless you have cable or satellite, you would not be able to watch him today. Sorry crude can be funny. Laughter is becoming a thing of the past for so many people today. It’s a sad thing.

Laughter can be a health benefit, for those who didn’t already know that. It’s good for the heart and can add years to your life. There is something that makes me laugh everyday. I even find humor in today’s world and some of the news I listen to everyday. Just listening to others talk sometimes, is enough to make me chuckle. People are so serious. Sure, I have my  moments, but some need to get a life or just lighten up a bit. Life is way to short. Everybody needs a break.

There are movies that could never be made today, or television shows.  All in The Family for one, was a ground breaker for television at the time. It shocked many people, but went on to great success and hopefully opened up some narrow minds out there. Then we had Blazing Saddles by Mel Brooks. This masterpiece of a movie could never be done today. Pure genius at work. No race or ethnic group was spared. Brooks slammed everyone, and we all laughed, a lot. Because it was like laughing at ourselves. I have a feeling some today would be horrified, especially the younger parental generation. Is this what we have become?  A society of shhhhh, don’t say that, it’s not funny.

Having a sense of humor is innate to all people. I may not laugh at what you find funny, and so on and so forth. The problem today is the world has become extreme in so many ways. To the point where many have forgotten what it’s like to laugh, just for the hell of it. Laugh at yourself. That’s the place to start. Stop taking yourselves so seriously. There’s enough out there to bring you down. Why let it? I laugh at me all the time. Just ask my husband. He laughs at me too!
