The last few days have been exhausting. Enough to where I didn’t even have any energy to blog. So let’s make up for that today. As most of us are aware, the Presidential Inauguration takes place tomorrow in our nations capital. I will be at work, but I will be listening. But how many others will be doing the same?
Once again, let me emphasize, I don’t discuss politics. However, I will sound off about some of those who represent us, not planning to attend. I live in a state where several of these elected officials decided it was their moral duty not to go. Yes, I get that they have the right to do just that, but their moral duty? Were they not elected by the people? Perhaps some of those who voted for you don’t agree with your choice. Let me make it clear that I’m sparing any party here. Does this country really mean anything to you? Tomorrow is about the celebration of our democracy, not the person holding the title.
I’ve been around for a few of these inaugurations. It is our version of a coronation, without the crowns. I recall when I was young and watching John F. Kennedy’s inauguration on television. The crowds alone mesmerized me. Why did so many people care to be there, in the middle of winter, to see this man being sworn in to serve his term? Because it is a special time in our history. It is a celebration of us as a nation.
Some traditions are important. We celebrate the birth of our nation every July 4th, we commemorate those who have represented our country in the Armed Services, and those who have lost their lives. This part of our history only takes place every 4 years. Is it asking too much to stop whining like babies and go because it’s just the right thing to do.
To all of those who we elected, to show respect for us as constituents, you need to get off of your assets and attend like grown-ups. This applies to all the female representatives out there too. What kind of example are you really showing little girls? It’s a few hours in a day, and if you want, you don’t have to attend the galas being held later. Losing builds character just as much as winning does.
All I hear about on the news is how everyone is afraid of things getting worse. People not coming together. Well, you can thank some of your elected officials for doing their part in behaving badly and not wanting to do their part as proud Americans!
Amen and Amen. This mentality of “my candidate didn’t win, so I am taking my marbles and staying home” is immature and irresponsible. My challenge to those elected officials who decide to skip this important event: go volunteer someplace tomorrow where your time and effort will, at least, matter.
I like that!
