Ringing in the New Year with Traditions

There is that word again, traditions. That’s because we as a family are big on them. Many out there have traditions that have evolved through out the years.

The faces may have changed, but my husband, sometimes more than myself, is steadfast to keep them going. I can’t remember how they started, but the kids look forward to them, especially our daughter. Now in the mix is our son-in-law, who also enjoys the festivities. As our son is off doing his own thing, we keep it moving here at home. We will stay in, as most New Year’s Eve’s. The food is good and drinking is unlimited since we don’t have to drive. The kids will spend the night and we usually continue the celebrating on January 1st.

Our menu on this night always consists of seafood. Not sure how that started, but it is the best tradition you could have. My husband takes over the chef duties on this night in particular. There is steamed shrimp, crab cakes, oysters, scallops on occasion and snow crab legs. Add salads and you got a great meal. What is there not to love?

Later in the evening, if we are still hungry, the finger foods make an appearance. These consist of dips, beef sticks, crackers, cheese and cut up veggies, just to add a little something  healthy. If you’re going to celebrate the old year going out, I say do it the right way. Remember the new year will be different. Chances are we probably won’t have room for these delights. They will just be eaten on our New Year’s day tradition.

This New Year’s day will consist of football. Since the parade we watch will not be on until the next day, it will be feasting and drinking mimosas to the NFL games.  The mimosas have become my daughter’s and mine’s tradition only. The men will stick to their hard liquor and beer. I never knew champagne could taste so good when mixed with vitamin C !

So whether your tradition is going out and reveling, or staying home and having a quiet celebration, cheers to traditions, old and new. They are the one thing that never goes out of style, whatever year it is!
