Holiday Tipping….How to Draw the Line

The topic of tipping certain people who offer services to you, might come up every holiday season. I for one, need to draw the line since our financial situation has changed over the past few years. Many people however,  have a long list of those who are part of their Christmas bonus list.

For those who have multiple vendors, it becomes a matter of how long you have dealt with those people. It’s probably a good idea to rank the list, and then set a limit.  After that is done, you need to decide what it should be, a gift or a gift card. Let me throw my two cents in on that one.

Gift cards get the nod here. In my opinion, you just can’t go wrong with one. There are so many to choose from, whether it be for a man or woman. They are also the easiest to get. I for one will be getting one for our newspaper delivery person. This will be the only one we give this year. This person works hard and is a new delivery person. Getting my paper dry and in one piece is important, so showing our gratitude to them is important.

I used to give something to the mail person, but that position seems to have become a merry-go-round of sorts. Truck delivery has made it less personable. And whatever you do, don’t park in front of the mail box!  I don’t have a hair stylist or manicurist, so that saves me there. However, if I did, they would probably get something from me.

It is nice to think of rewarding those who do work hard for their money. But if you can’t do it, then don’t. And don’t feel guilty about it. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford to buy gifts for loved ones and acquaintances too. Yes, it’s only once a year. Times are tight for many out there, including those who are giving the tips. So give what you can if you can. If not, no worries. They won’t think the worst of you for it!
