So we started out with a 18 lb. turkey this year. My husband was never keen on the size since we had at least 8 people coming over for Thanksgiving. He likes to give out leftovers to the kids and have enough for at least another dinner and sandwiches.
Turns out we are having 10 total. Okay, maybe 18 lbs. won’t cover all those extras after the main meal. It is now 2 days before the big day. I am off from work the rest of the week. Today and tomorrow are the busiest days for me. Cleaning was on my agenda until my husband took to panic mode. The 18 lb. one just was not going to work. I conceded maybe not for what he wanted to do with it afterwards. Off I went to the store near us, who we knew had carried our name brand, and had many to choose from, two weeks ago anyway.
Much to my surprise, their refrigerator was still full. Behold, a 24 lb. turkey, frozen to you know what. Good thing I am strong enough these days to lift something that heavy. When I got it in the house, I realized it was not going to fit in the kitchen sink to start the thawing out process in water. Great minds think alike, and my husband and I both agreed, the downstairs utility sink in his room was the answer. It’s deep enough and big enough to hold it. As the water filled the tub, the turkey consequently started to float. This is one time I was glad, we didn’t trash these old bar bell weights. It’s that round black thing you see in the picture holding the bird down.
And so, I do believe that this 24 lb. bird will be ready to put into the roasting pan on Thursday morning.
It may not be a traditional way of thawing one out, but when you have less than 48 hours to work with, it is the only way!
