Whenever I start getting stressed out a bit getting ready for the holidays, I turn to music. I am a child of the 60’s and 70’s, and my tastes are very eclectic. Of course, it’s my opinion that this is the best music ever to hit the airwaves, only because of the variety of artists and different types.
I have been into music, all my life. My two older brothers always had radios on, so I was always exposed to it. I can remember songs I heard when I was 5 years old. That amazes my husband. But then it’s always about the beat, not the lyrics so much. I began my 45 rpm collection when I was 8. It was a Beach Boys record with the song “Good Vibrations” on it. It took off from there.
As stated earlier, my tastes are eclectic. I love rock, blues, Motown, soul, country…the list goes on. If it sounds good, I like it. However, I just can’t get into the 90’s and the later varieties. Could be my age, or that I have found my music and I love it. I can turn on the tv and find a station to listen to for whatever my taste is for that day. Driving becomes less tedious when I can tune into any kind of station on my satellite radio.
I have a collection of downloaded music on my phone and iPad. It’s at my fingertips, wherever and when I want to listen to it.
Our tastes in music was even passed down to our kids. They have an appreciation of the great groups of the seventies, because they heard them around the house when they were younger. The same can be said for me growing up and listening to my parents music. I can listen to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, or even Andy Williams. Throw in some Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, and there you go.
I have always said that I can survive without a television for a while. But don’t take my songs from me. The list of my favorites are just to long. The Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Temptations, Supremes, and so on and so forth. Throw in some Lynyrd Skynyrd and Gordon Lightfoot, two of my favorite artists I saw in person.
My dream is to one day get a juke box, where I can put all of my 45 collection. Maybe it will come true.
To those of you out there who are my age, keep embracing those great years of music. Pass them down to your grand kids too. I know I will!
