As with most dinner parties, serving light appetizers beforehand is commonplace. When it comes to the holidays, having some light ones to nibble on while waiting for the main meal to be served, is also a good idea.
My feeling is keep it simple and even a little on the healthy side. The most usual ones are veggies, dips and cheeses. Crackers can also go with these snacks. Some people serve seafood such as shrimp cocktails or crab balls. Sounds good, but I don’t want my guests filling up on those foods and not really having room for the dinner.
Since Thanksgiving and Christmas meals are usually on the heavier side, no need for snacks with too much girth. Nuts are one of those lighter snacks that can fill you up very quickly too. Rule of thumb is to make sure people with nut allergies are aware that they might be served. And if the allergies are serious, then don’t even bring them out.
Avoid things like chips, pretzels and popcorn. In my opinion, that says kid party. The first two are also empty calories. The popcorn can get to be messy, and end up everywhere. A little extra time and effort goes a long way and your guests will appreciate it.
Drinks are probably the most important before meal item served up when people start arriving. Make sure you know what everyone drinks. Get stocked up no later than this weekend. Our crowd runs the gambit from white wine to beer. My husband handles that job, and he is very good at it. Always make sure you keep fruit juices and soda on hand for those who don’t want alcohol.
We are now a week away from the first big holiday. This is the last weekend to get your main staples. Just remember, being a good hostess isn’t that hard. Be mindful of what you think would make you happy when going to someone’s home as a guest. Treat your company the same way, and your time together will be that much more special!
