Local food banks are in need of food donations all year-long. Around this time of year however, there is an aggressive movement to collect goods for those less fortunate than ourselves.
Since we do the holiday meals for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, I start my shopping early for the items that I can put away in the pantry until I need to use them. However, my pantry is not big, so space is tight. I usually go through the goods in there and pull out what I know, will not be eaten.
This method of elimination also assures me a certain number of donations I can contribute to the food banks. At this time of year and around early spring, the boy scout troops in our area and our mail people collect food for those who need assistance . They both hold food drives and drop off flyers along with plastic bags to fill up and be picked up on a specific date.
I make sure that the food I donate is still usable within a reasonable time span even if the date says it has expired. Experts have taught me that just because a date is on that item, doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be consumed. Just make sure if it’s a can good, that there is no obvious bloating around the top or bottom. If so discard anyway. You don’t want to eat what’s in there either.
On occasion, if I don’t have too much to give, I learned that going to a dollar store in the area, could supplement my donations. Here, you can buy 5 items for $5. It’s a good deal for both parties, especially if you are on a budget. Just make sure that you try to give a food item with some reasonable heath benefit. Canned tuna in water, soups with lower fat and salt content work well. Cooked cereal pouches are good too. Anything you can afford to give, is a big help at this time of year.
With the weather getting colder now, more people are looking for a warm place to sleep in and a warm meal. It is always essential to give what you can. Most of us aren’t rich. However, we are comfortable enough to share a little of what we have with others. There are to many in this country who need our help. Not being political, just stating fact. One day it could be someone you love out there, or you. Remember that when you fill up that bag with some food for a person who will truly appreciate it!
