Decorate for Halloween or Harvest…Tis the Season

photo11In my opinion, one never gets to old to enjoy any decorations for Halloween or the Harvest season. We always have some kind of fall decor hanging, either inside or out. And so because Halloween is only a few weeks away, just thought it would be nice to share some ideas.

When the kids were young, it was so much fun to get the house ready for this holiday. Picking out costumes for them, buying and carving the pumpkins, and going trick or treating were a major deal. This neighborhood was full of kids. Until our two were old enough to go with other groups of kids, we took them out for a few hours after dinner, alongside other parents from our street. It became a tradition of sorts on our block.

The nice thing about Halloween and the Harvest is that some decorations you put out for one, can be kept out for the other. When Halloween is over, let those scarecrows, cornstalks and gourds hang around for a while. Ours stay out for Thanksgiving, and come down for Christmas.

Scarecrows can be bought at stores such as Michael’s and Joann’s when they have sales. You can buy different sizes to accommodate your space. Cornstalks can usually be found at local farms or some home outlets. Gourds can be bought at just about any store. The reals ones can last for quite a while. I also invested in some fake gourds. They fill up my wicker basket, and that way, I don’t need to spend money on to many real ones. Plus, they can be used year after year.

We are lucky to have a front porch, so decorating can get creative. Even if you don’t have one, pumpkins and scarecrows can find a place where the trick or treaters can see them. It adds to the festive atmosphere. For those who don’t celebrate Halloween, then just go Harvest. Make or buy a wreath for your front door and get a flag for a pole or a small one for your yard. You can’t go wrong to add a little color and mood this fall.

So don’t forget your candy if you do Halloween, and add some autumn colors to your outside or inside. It will brighten your mood and make that little chill in the air just a bit more tolerable!
