So I was going through the Sunday paper ads this morning, as I do every weekend, and realized just how much shopping for clothes doesn’t interest me these days.
I was never one to be considered a ” clothes horse”, as it were, but good sales could get my attention now and then. It could go back to when I was in college. All I needed were several good pairs of Levis and many tops, and I was good to go. Of course I had some nice outfits to get me through special events, but not to the extent where they took up that much space in my closet.
When I entered the working world, I watched my spending and still managed to look nice without going broke. My philosophy was to wait for the good sales at the nice stores. Buy the basics and match them up with inexpensive accessories. I even went through a second-hand store phase, as the kids were growing up. Don’t knock it ’til you try it.
This brings to mind, associates I have worked with over the years, who could fill a small room with outfits. A woman I have worked with for many years, fits that bill. She can go several weeks without wearing the same thing twice. She even admits to having one of those small rooms as her personal walk-in. I don’t envy her, because if that is what she likes, great for her, just not for me.
If anything these days, I have begun to downsize my wardrobe. Charities have received some nice things from my personal collection. I keep just enough for work, and the rest for other times. I also make sure I hang on to a couple different sizes to cover my bad habits, i.e..extra eating and not working out.
The only shopping that truly interests me these days is for the home. Redecorating my rooms and not myself. Certainly more expensive, but so much more satisfying. I know for a fact that women in my age range are enjoying life, looking and feeling good, and shopping as often as ever. I’m not embarrassed to say, they won’t see me in the department stores anytime to soon!
