Memorial Day, is just not what it used to be. I suppose this might come out sending like an editorial. If it does, then oh well. The holiday weekend is upon us and so begins the official start of summer. You may be on your way to the beach, or planning your weekend cookout. Perhaps, you are hitting some great sales in the marketplace, be it for a new car or clothes. The possibilities are endless.
So begins my rant. I just don’t remember all of this going on growing up back in the 60’s and 70’s. At least, not as much then, as it is today. Memorial day was exactly what it sounds like. It was a day to remember those who served our country and sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. My own uncle died in WWII. I recall everyone putting out an American flag, whether it be big or small.
Back in the day not everyone had a cookout, went to the beach or shopped until they dropped. People celebrated in their own way. Nobody turned on the television to see a car or mattress make Memorial Day headlines because it was 50 percent off that day.
No, I’m not naive. What I am though is big on tradition, and for the most part that has been replaced with commercialism. Why should this holiday be any different that Christmas or Easter.
Memorial Day is important because people forget about all of those who have served and died protecting this great country of ours. Remember when you drive home that new car or sleep on that comfy mattress, you are lucky to be here in this country to do all that.
Then, remember those who paid the ultimate price to make sure we could continue living this kind of life. Have a good Memorial Day everyone!
